The population at the 2000 census was 6,928, with a population density of 1,861.7 people per square mile. The area of Hartford city is 3.7 square miles, all of which is land.

 

The median income for a household in the city was $31,531, and for a family it was $39,654, the median income for males was $29, 257, and for females it was $20,600.

 

Folklore taught in local elementary schools told that Hartford City was originally a place to cross Lick Creek (known as Hart's ford), which evolved to Hartford, and then later to Hartford city to avoid confusion.
